April 25, 2013

Now this is a hot one.  Someone has made off with a $26,000.00 bottle of 50 year old Glenfiddich single malt, one of only fifty in the world, from an LCBO outlet in Toronto.  I am proud to say that I recognised the store from the photo and it is the Queen's Quay outlet, one of the finer locations in terms of selection.  Yes, they have a clear photo of the suspect walking out of the store, having paid for a bottle of wine, with his coat draped over his shoulder and, presumably, the arm holding said bottle of scotch.

While I recognised the store (it was later confirmed I got that one right - without the photo I might have guessed the Yonge and Summerhill location which is something of a flagship location) I was trumped by the journalist who could identify his shirt as Burberry.

It is hard to make the accusation of negligence, it was in a glass case which some sources say was locked, but one might reasonably suggest there was a lack of observation.

A number of lawyers are Tracks regulars and the consensus seems to be, photo or not, it will be difficult to obtain a conviction unless the suspect is caught with the bottle in his possession and, more likely than not, it is in the hands of a collector by now.
